Mount Esk Nursery School Consultation

On 24 February 2026, Midlothian Council approved the proposal to close Mount Esk Nursery School.

As per the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010 Scottish Ministers have been notified of this decision and now have a period of eight weeks to decide whether to issue a call in notice.

Members of the public have a period of three weeks during which they can make representations to Scottish Ministers regarding whether they wish a call in to be issued or not.

All representations must be made before this three week period ends on Monday 16th March 2026.

Overview

We want to hear your views on the proposal to close Mount Esk Nursery School and re-designate it to Hawthornden Primary School Nursery class.

The statutory consultation begins on Monday 10 November 2025 and ends on Sunday 21 December 2025. 

The proposals are:

  • Mount Esk Nursery School will close from August 2026;  

  • Hawthornden Primary School Nursery class will be established from August 2026; 

  • Mount Esk Nursery School will be closed and re-designated to Hawthornden Primary School Nursery class; 

  • The re-designation of Mount Esk Nursery School to Hawthornden Primary School Nursery class will take effect from August 2026; 

  • The new Hawthornden Primary School Nursery Class will be under the leadership of the Hawthornden Primary School Head Teacher.
