Overview

Midlothian Council is carrying out a survey on the use of and public views on parks and other significant green spaces in the area. The information collected will be used as part of our Open Space Audit and to inform the next Midlothian Open Space Strategy.

What do we mean by parks and significant green spaces?

  • Large Public Park – a park over 6 hectares in area with a diverse range of facilities and functions and a mix of formal and informal spaces. They have play equipment, facilities and opportunities for a range of ages and are accessible by public transport and path networks. They are potential locations for community and public events and often accomodate facilities such as toilets, pavilions and parking.
  • Community Park – a park between 2 and 6 hectares in size with several functions accessible to a neighbourhood. They have a variety of play equipment/opportunities for a range of ages as well as opportunities for informal and formal recreation and activities.
  • Local Park - a park between 0.4 and 2 hectares with one or more features such as a play area, informal play spaces, sports facilities, grass and planting.
  • Functional Amenity Greenspace - landscaped areas providing space for informal recreational activities. These are over 0.2ha, have a gradient of less than 1:5, are free-drained, have a maintained grass area of at least 0.1ha, are not bounded by a road or could have a fence or other boundary treatment separating it from a road.

NOTE: THE COUNCIL DOES NOT MAINTAIN ALL OF THESE SPACES.  THE COUNCIL CAN ONLY IMPLEMENT CHANGE IN SPACES WHERE IT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINENCE.

Near the bottom of this page, under "Related", there are three files that you may find useful for completing this survey. They are:

  • A map of Midlothian's parks and functional amenity greenspaces;
  • A list of all Midlothian's parks and functional amenity greenspaces; and
  • A list of Midlothian's parks and functional amenity greenspaces by settlement.
